Hickman catheter is a large bore central venous

            catheter usually inserted into the SVC via a peripheral vein



            1. Lack of peripheral venous access
            2. Delivery of medications that cause peripheral vein damage, e.g.

                 chemotherapy, hypertonic solution, total parenteral nutrition,
                 vasopressors.

            3. Prolonged venous access
