Carotid duplex scan confirmed significant stenosis at the distal right common carotid
artery, extending into the right internal carotid artery. Carotid duplex uses flow
velocity & pre- and post-stenosis ratio to gauge the degree of stenosis.
A patient presented with sudden onset left arm and leg weakness which lasted for a
few hours with complete spontaneous recovery. CT brain was normal, and a CT
angiogram showed a calcified 70% stenosis in the right carotid bifurcation extending
into the internal carotid artery. This is not the usual investigation for carotid disease
as normally a carotid duplex scan provides accurate information of the location and
degree of stenosis.
