The diathermy use during an operation may interfere with pacemakers. For certain types
of pacemakers, a magnet is placed near the device, to change the pacing mode from the
patient’s programmed mode to a pacing fixed rate of 85 bpm. Placing a magnet near the
device suspends tachyarrhythmia detection. When the magnet is removed, the device
returns to its programmed operation.
