Chronic gouty arthritis will disrupt joints and tendons, which may tear or rupture leading to
deformity and loss of joint function. Gout crystals accumulate to form tophi, which are
visible under the skin. Tophi per se are not painful, but may erode through the skin to form
an ulcer.
