Carotid artery anatomy
Common carotid artery:
Superficial Left CCA originates form aortic arch
Temporal artery
Right CCA from brachiocephalic trunk
Runs in carotid sheath together with Internal jugular vein and
vagus nerve
Maxillary artery Divides into internal and external carotid artery at carotid
Occipital artery
bifurcation
Facial artery External carotid artery:
Originates from CCA
Lingual artery Multiple branches supplying the neck and face
Internal jugular vein
Internal carotid artery:
Originates from CCA
External carotid artery Has no branches in the neck
Internal carotid artery It enters the skull through the carotid canal
Common carotid artery Carotid sheath:
Superior Thyroid
artery Fibrous tissue that surrounds the vascular structures in the
Vagus nerve neck
Contains the common carotid artery, internal carotid artery ,
Vertebral artery internal jugular vein and vagus nerve
Subclavian artery
