Intravenous heparin was given and the arteries were clamped. Via a transverse
arteriotomy of the distal CFA, a Fogarty catheter was passed up to the iliac artery
and aorta, the balloon inflated, and fresh thrombus retrieved, followed by very
good inflow, indicating the obstructing thrombus was removed.

The colour of the thrombus

gave indication on the
chronicity of the emboli. Semi-

organized and more chronic

emboli were paler, whereas
fresh thrombus was dark red

in colour
