Scars Hypertrophic scars are raised scars that do not go beyond the boundaries of the injury,
whereas keloid scars are due to overly aggressive healing process with thickened
hyalinized collagen (keloidal collagen) which extend beyond the original injury.
Scarring is a natural healing process in response to injury. Normal scars are not raised.
Africans or Asians are more prone to development of pigmented scars than Caucasians. Treatment options of hypertrophic/ keloid scars include local application or injections of

steroids to reduce swelling, redness, or itchiness. Steroids break the bonds between

collagen fibers and reduce inflammation. In severe cases, the scar can be excised
surgically, but there is no guarantee that the new scar may heal any better.
