Nearest the heat source where the heat or
insult cannot be ameliorated rapidly, there is
rapid cell death. This central zone of tissue
death is called the Zone of Coagulation.
Surrounding the Zone of Coagulation is an
area of tissue where the damage is less severe.
Immediate cell death does not occur, but the
circulation is compromised due to the
damage of microcirculation. Because of this
sluggish circulation, it is called the Zone of
Stasis. If left untreated, this narrow zone will
undergo necrosis as the inflammatory reaction
progresses. Clinically this is seen as progression
of burn injury depth.
