Hypermetabolism develops due to secretion of
stress hormones, such as cortisol, catecholamines
and glucagon. Profound catabolism, due to
suppression of anabolic hormones such as growth
hormones and insulin, results in muscle protein
breakdown. Clinically, patients may have
tachycardia, hyperthermia and muscle wasting.
Immunosuppression, bacterial translocation from
intestine, acute lung injury (Acute Respiratory
Distress Syndrome), concomitant inhalational
injury may also lead to sepsis, shock or even
mortality
