Sebaceous carcinoma
A rare but aggressive tumour arising from
Meibomian gland, Zeiss gland or sebaceous
gland
Eyelid / periocular is the most common site of
presentation
Can occur elsewhere as well
Predominantly in elderly population
Female predominance (2:1)
Appears as erythematous raised nodules that
slowly increase in size +/- ulceration
May be mistaken as chalazion, blepharitis
or cicatricial pemphigoid
Biopsy is necessary for any suspicious
lesions
Treatment: Surgical excision with at at least
1.5cm mqrgin. Orbital exenteration is often
indicated in tumours involving eyelids.
An elderly gentleman with sebaceous carcinoma involving left
medial upper eyelid. Wide resection and orbital exenteration
was performed. The defect was reconstructed with a free
anterolateral thigh flap.
