Anatomy of cleft lip and

        palate

 Palate fusion occurs between 9 to 12 weeks of

            gestation

 Cleft palate can be divided into primary and
            secondary cleft palate

 Anatomically primary palate consists features
anterior to incisive foramen, which include lip,

            alveolus and hard palate.

 Secondary palate is posterior to the incisive
foramen and consists of hard palate and soft

            palate

 Primary cleft is due to failure of fusion of maxillary

            and medial nasal processes.

 Secondary cleft palate is due to incomplete
fusion of lateral palatine processes with each

            other and the nasal septum.
