Upon clamping of the left carotid arteries, the patient was suddenly not obeying commands
   and was confused and agitated. We suspected the cerebral blood flow was inadequate, and
   promptly placed in a shunt during the endarterectomy. The type of shunt we used was

   called a Javid shunt (CR Bard, USA).
