The most common site of
   blunt aortic injury is at the
   isthmus (between the left

   subclavian artery and the
   ligamentum arteriosum). The
   injury can range from an

   intimal flap (like this one) to
   intramural haematoma, to
   pseudoaneurysm with

   contained mediastinal
   rupture. Frank rupture causes
   exsanguination at the scene
   of injury.
