• Port-a-cath is a subcutaneously implanted device that provides venous access to
patients who need long-term administration of medications intra-venously.
• A common indication includes giving chemotherapy via central veins that may damage
small peripheral veins if given peripherally.
• This port-a-cath (white arrow) was placed via the left cephalic vein with the tip of the
catheter in the superior vena cava, just proximal to the right atrium. (blue arrow)
