Raynaud’s Phenomenon

Leo Buerger (1879 Vienna – 1943 New York City) was an Austrian-
American pathologist, surgeon and urologist. He worked as a

pathologist and surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital from 1907 to 1020,
and in 1908 gave the first accurate pathological description of
thromboangiitis obliterans. The strong association with smoking was
reported by Felix von Winiwarter (1852 –1931 Vienna), an Austrian

 physician, in 1894.

RAYNAUD’S PHENOMENON is a condition caused by decreased blood flow to the
fingers from vasospasm in response to cold, stress, or emotion. In can be idiopathic (pri-
Leo Buerger mary), or associated with connective tissue diseases, vibrations, or medications (second-
ary). The typical color changes of pallor, then rubor, before returning to normal may be
         associated with pain and numbness.
