Chronic Venous Ulcer
Ulceration due to venous hypertension is generally due to incompetence in deep and
superficial veins, with or without previous history of deep vein thrombosis. The skin
pigmentation of chronic venous insufficiency is due to deposition of haemosiderin. Why
ulcers develop is complex. This may be due to transudation of inflammatory mediators
into the subcutaneous space, and fibrin to build up around the vessels preventing
oxygen and nutrients from reaching cells, and subsequent breakdown of the skin.
