Fluid resuscitation

Fluid resuscitation should be initiated in

children with 10% TBSA burn rather than 20%

          TBSA as with adults.

Fluid for resuscitation should be given with

          maintenance fluids.

           Resuscitative fluid

                3-4ml x weight (Kg) x TBSA (LR)

           Maintenance fluid (D5LR)

                First 10Kg BW: 100ml/Kg

                Second 10Kg BW: 50ml/Kg

                For each Kg BW above 20Kg: 20ml/Kg

          Cerebral edema and hyponatraemia are

more likely in children with fluid overload.

          Careful fluid administration, avoiding

          hypotonic fluids and blood electrolytes

          monitoring are important.

The most reliable parameter of adequate

resuscitation is the urinary output. It is

important to keep urine output at 1ml/kg/hr.
