Principles in the management of burn in

          paediatric populations are similar to that of

          adults.





          The most significant differences between

          children and adults are:





            Larger surface area to body weight ratio


               • Higher metabolic rate


               • Greater evaporation and water loss

               • Greater heat loss






            Lack of shivering reflex under the age of

                one and hence one must be vigilant in
                preventing hypothermia






            Thinner skin





            Other considerations such as social and

                emotional development of children
