 Excisional biopsy

 Excision down to and including

subcutaneous fat

 To provide information on tumour

thickness

 As the margins necessary for
definitive wide resection is

determined by tumour thickness

 Incisional biopsy is NOT

recommended due to

 sampling error

 unable to provide tumour thickness,

and

 possible deeper implantation of

tumour cells

 Precautions:

Avoid undermining/trimming of
dogear in wound closure

If wound cannot be closed
primarily, wound can be skin

grafted or dressed while awaiting
for final pathology from paraffin

sections
