Melanoma Subtypes

 Superficial spreading melanoma

 The most common type

 Lesions are offen flat with irregular
border, pigmentation and surface

 May arise from pre-existing naevi

 Nodular melanoma

 Better demarcated

 Relatively early vertical growth
phase

 Often occur de novo

 Can be amelanotic in 5%

 Acral lentiginous melanoma

 Occur on palms, soles,
mucocutaneous junctions and in
subungual locations

 Melanonychia (black streaks in
nails)

 Lentigo maligna melanoma

 On sun-exposed skin

 The invasive counterpart of lentigo
maligna

 3-5% of lentigo maligna will become
invasive
