Melanoma Subtypes
Superficial spreading melanoma
The most common type
Lesions are offen flat with irregular
border, pigmentation and surface
May arise from pre-existing naevi
Nodular melanoma
Better demarcated
Relatively early vertical growth
phase
Often occur de novo
Can be amelanotic in 5%
Acral lentiginous melanoma
Occur on palms, soles,
mucocutaneous junctions and in
subungual locations
Melanonychia (black streaks in
nails)
Lentigo maligna melanoma
On sun-exposed skin
The invasive counterpart of lentigo
maligna
3-5% of lentigo maligna will become
invasive
