The hypopharynx can be divided into three subsites:
Posterior pharyngeal wall: This is the back wall of the pharynx, and it extends from the
level of the hyoid bone down to the esophagus.
Pyriform sinus: There is one pyriform sinus on each side of the larynx. Each is shaped
like an inverted pyramid, with the tip pointing into the esophagus.
Post-cricoid area:This is the area just behind the cricoid cartilage.
