Majority of pharyngo-esophageal (PE) tumours are squamous cell carcinoma.

Uncommon histologic types include adenocarcinoma, lymphoma, and sarcoma.

Tumours are usually infiltrative with a propensity for submucosal spread.

Skip lesions and multifocal areas of disease are not unusual.
