PE squamous cell carcinoma affects men between 55-70 years of age. There is frequently a
history of chronic tobacco +/- alcohol consumption. Synchronous lesions within the upper
aerodigestive tract can be detected in ~10% patients as a result of field cancerization.
Plummer-Vinson syndrome is characterized by hypopharyngeal webs and iron deficiency anaemia.
This syndrome has is associated with a high incidence of post-cricoid carcinomas in Northern
European women who do not smoke.
