Epstein Barr virus (EBV) is almost universally
associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma,
particularlyWHOType III tumours.
EBV was first observed in mid 1950s by Dr. Denis
Burkitt on children suffering from Burkitt’s
lymphoma in Uganda. Dr. Anthony Epstein
Subsequently, in 1964, Dr. Anthony Epstein and Dr.
Yvonne Barr discovered a common herpes virus
(EBV) in the tumour cells of Burkitt’s lymphoma
More than 90% of children over 2 years are
seropositive
