The nasopharynx is lined by stratified squamous epithelium.
Majority of the cancer of the nasopharynx arise from the epithelium.
World Health Organization classification of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC):
• Type 1: Nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma
• Type 2: Keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma
• Type 3: Undifferentiated nonkeratinizing carcinoma
Other uncommon tumours involving the nasopharynx include adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic
carcinoma, lymphoma, plasmacytoma, etc.
