As the patient’s cardiopulmonary function improved, and before taking off the
cannulae, “Trial off VA-ECMO” is a necessary process to test whether the patient’s
own cardiopulmonary function was sustainable or not without mechanical support. Removal of the ECMO cannulae required open surgical removal.
