ULTRASOUND
VENOUS DUPLEX ULTRASOUND to demonstrate sapheno-femoral junction reflux
in a patient with gross R leg varicose veins. With the patient standing the ultrasound probe
was used to show the sapheno-femoral junction in the groin. The B-modes images give good
visualualization of the common femoral artery and vein, and the junction to the greater sa-
phenous vein. Compression of the lower greater saphenous vein followed by release showed
a augmentation of venous flow (audio) followed by reverse flow caudally due to valvular A portable, continuous wave Hand-held DOPPLER ULTRASOUND probe can also be

junction (left) or directly over the greater saphenous vein (right) . A venous flow signal
augmentation was detected upon squeezing the calf. A reflux signal will be heard after
release of the calf pressure demonstrating reverse (downward) flow of blood across an
incompetent valve.
