Mycotic Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

MYCOTIC ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM is a rare type aneurysm associated with high
morbidity and mortality. Group D salmonella is the common pathogen followed by staph-

ylococcus aureus. Apart from the septicaemia, the saccular morphology of mycotic aneu-
rysm contribute to rapid enlargement and high rupture rate.

A 67 year old male patient with newly diagnosed diabetes was admitted to Medical unit
due to fever and confusion. Subsequent blood culture grew Salmonella enteritidis. He was
put on parental antibiotic ceftriaxone and CT scan was performed showing a saccular aor-
tic aneurysm close to renal arteries with retroperitoneal gas.

CT scan showed a typical appearance of a pseudoaneurysm in the infrarenal
8 aorta, but with ominous gas around the aneurysm. 9
