High voltage burns may cause injury by flash
burns and current transmission:
Flash burn causes cutaneous burn without
deep tissue damage. The current does not
pass through the victim.
Current transmission results in both
cutaneous and deep tissue damage.
Muscle injury may precipitate compartment
syndrome and fasciotomy is required to
release the pressure of edematous muscle
under the inelastic deep fascia.
The muscle injury and necrosis results in
myoglobin release in the circulation i.e.
rhabdomyolysis. If left unattended, it may
lead to acute renal failure.
