The following should be noted on endoscopic examination:
• Location and extent of tumour involvement. This is particularly important for assessment of
posterior extent of tumour in the posterior tongue and oropharynx
• Laryngeal function including vocal cord mobility and supraglottic sensation
• Presence and location of synchronous lesions along the upper aerodigestive tract secondary to
field cancerisation
• Biopsy of tumour and any suspicious lesions for histological diagnosis
