Venous Ulcer With regards to the colour of the base of the ulcer, it contains granulation tissue if pink,
slough if yellow, and necrotic tissue if white or black. In this case, there is slough on the
granulation, indicating chronicity of the ulcer with some superficial infection. A culture
swab should be taken.
Large venous ulcers can be difficult to treat. In this patient with chronic recurrent ulcer of
the right medial ankle, there were no varicose veins, but pigmentation indicative of chronic
venous insufficiency. The patient required regular dressings together with elevation and
bedrest. When the ulcer is healed, he or she may require compression stockings everyday.
