Amputation of the left big toe was
offered as the likelihood of wound
healing is high in view of adequate
distal perfusion (palpable distal
pulses). The aim of amputation is to
remove the infected or dead part of
the leg. The level is chosen according
to the most distal part where tissue
is viable for healing. In other forms
of peripheral vascular diseases, prior
revascularisation is essential to
optimise blood flow to the wound
for healing after amputations.
Pre-operative insulin therapy was
subsequently started.
Transmetatarsal amputation was
performed to remove the big toe.
Haemostasis was achieved and
wound dressings were done.
