Capillary malformation
It is a structural and morphologic anomaly
resulting from faulty embryonic morphogenesis.
It presents at birth and grows proportionally
with the child. It does not regress, unlike
hemangioma.
It affects 0.3% of newborn and can exist
anywhere on the body. Majority involves the
face (80%). If found along the trigeminal nerve
distribution, one must watch out for other
manifestations of Sturge-Weber syndrome.
Treatment options
1) Photocoagulation with pulse dyed laser
and/or Nd-YAG laser
2) Combined laser and medical treatment
e.g. Imiquimod
Ophthalmological evaluation of glaucoma is
warranted if CN V1 is affected
Other syndromes associated with capillary
malformation include Klippel-Trenaunay
Syndrome and Parkes Weber Syndrome
