Classification of
Lymphoedema
The classification of etiology of
lymphedema can be primary or secondary
Primary lymphedema can be further
divided into three subtypes depending on
age of onset : Lymphoedema congenita,
lymphoedema praecox, and lymphedema
tarda
Lymphoedema congenita is also called
Milroy’s disease usually begins at birth or
age less than 14 (10% of cases)
It is autosomal dominantly inherited and is
due to mutation of the vascular endothelial
growth factor receptor-3
Lymphoedema praecox usually begins
during adolescence (80% of cases)
Lymphedema tarda starts later in life when
patient is smore than 35 years old (10% of
cases)
