There are many incisions described for performing
radical neck dissection and modified radical neck
dissection (right), each with its pros and cons with
regards to exposure, and aesthetic and functional
considerations.
In our center, we adopt the McFee incision. The lack
of a vertical incision is not only aesthetically pleasing,
but more importantly, prevents exposure of
underlying carotid artery in case of wound infection
and/or wound dehiscence. This is particularly valid in
those who have had their SCM removed, whereby
the carotid artery lies directly beneath the skin. Any
wound infection or dehiscence can lead to blow-out
bleeding, stroke and mortality.
